Police compensate 2 blockade victims
Police today compensated the families of two of the victims of an arson attack in Rangpur early Wednesday during the opposition’s countrywide nonstop blockade.
Five people were killed and more than 15 civilians were burnt as alleged blockaders hurled a petrol bomb at a bus in Mithapukur upazila amid the blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque and Director General of Rapid Action Battalion Benazir Ahmed handed over the compensation to the families at the local Palli Bidyut office.
The family of a deceased passenger was provided with Tk 50,000 while an injured got Tk 10,000.
The other injured and the families of the rest of the deceased were not available to receive their compensation, police told our Rangpur correspondent.
Speaking at a view-exchange meeting at Mithapukur Girls’ High School later, the newly appointed police chief said the attackers who have killed the innocent people and damaged public properties are not friends of people.
He urged people to come forward to resist them.
Benazir Ahmed said a quarter has declared a war against the Sate to gain tis petty interests.
“We foiled their attempts in 2013. This time, we will also thwart it by taking people with us,” said the new boss of the elite force.
