PM for remanding Khaleda, Tarique for Zia murder
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman will have to be taken on remand first for holding the trial of late president Ziaur Rahman murder.
"Whatever link the mother and son have with the killing of Zia will have to be looked into," she said at a crowded press conference at her official residence Gono Bhaban in the afternoon.
Hasina's comments came as a reporter wanted to know her reaction about Tarique's recent remarks in Kuala Lumpur in which he demanded taking the premier on remand for the killing.
The press conference was arranged to brief the media on the outcomes of her just-concluded visit to China.
Mentioning that murder case never be "tamadi" (time-barred), the PM said Khaleda claims she was in power thrice. "But why didn't she investigate and hold trial of the killing of her husband?" the premier asked.
Hasina said Tarique amassed huge wealth by opening Hawa Bhaban and controlled everything from administration to army. "But why he didn't hold trial of the killing of his father?" she questioned.
In this connection, the premier mentioned a meeting of Khaleda at Golap Shah Mazar in Gulistan in the capital in 1990, where she termed Gen Ershad as the killer of her husband first nine years after the killing.
"But my question is why they took two big houses, car and cash from Ershad as she claimed at that time that Gen Zia did not leave behind anything except broken suitcase and torn vest," she said.
The prime minister said the cabinet after the murder allocated a house for Khaleda. "But she did not like that house and later she took the best house in Gulshan at that time by changing the cabinet's decision," Hasina said.
Hasina said Gulshan house could not satisfy Khaleda. "She took another house inside the cantonment from Ershad which she could not take legally," she said.
The prime minister said what was the mystery and what were the relations behind taking houses, car and cash from Ershad whom they described the murderer of Zia. "The family of Gen Zia will have to give reply to this question," she said.
