Piash Karim buried at Banani Graveyard
Piash Karim, a professor of Brac University, was buried at Banani Graveyard in Dhaka this afternoon.
His namaz-e-janaza was held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Juma prayers. He was laid to eternal rest around 3:00pm, said Iqbal Chowdhury, a cousin of Piash Karim.
Earlier in the morning, the body was taken to his Dhanmondi residence in the city instead of Central Shaheed Minar from the mortuary of Square Hospital as different quarters raised objection to a move to take it to the Shaheed Minar, UNB adds.
Meanwhile, Ganagajaran Mancha, BCL Dhaka University unit, Muktijoddha Santan Command, Bangabandhu Sainik Platoon and some other organisations formed a human chain at 10:00am on the Shahid Minar premises to prevent any move by Piash Karim’s family to take his body to the Shaheed Minar for paying tributes.
They also observed a sit-in there as per their previous announcement.
Dhaka University authorities on Wednesday rejected the application submitted by Piash Karim’s family seeking permission for taking his body to Shaheed Minar.
Meanwhile, Chhatra Sangram Parishad, a platform of seven student bodies, declared that they will resist the move to take Piash Karim’s body to the Central Shaheed Minar.
Piash Karim, a professor of BRAC University’s Economics and Social Sciences Department and a panelist of TV talk-shows, died of cardiac arrest early Monday at the age of 56.
BNP will observe ‘mourning day’ today across the country to condole the death of the right-leaning political analyst.
