People behind many successes, not govt
The heroes behind Bangladesh's many successes in the last 40 years are its ordinary people, not the government, said eminent economist and former adviser to a caretaker government Dr Akbar Ali Khan yesterday.
Bangladesh's real achievements are women of villages improving their lives using microcredit, poor girls bringing success in readymade garment exports and illiterate migrant workers sending $18 to 19 billion a year as remittance, he said.
Courageous Bangladeshis conquered Mount Everest which made us proud, he told a press conference Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club organised in the capital's Jatiya Press Club to announce an expedition its six members are going to embark on.
Leaving for Nepal on October 10, the six will climb Mount Kyazo Ri in the Himalayas and build a memorial at Dughla Pass, which falls en route the base camp of Mount Everest, commemorating Everest conqueror Mohammed Khaled Hossain, better known as Sajal Khaled, who passed away on his descent on May 20, 2013.
“The expedition team will carry a stone with Sajal Khaled's name written on it and put it on the memorial,” Enam Ul Haque, who has the laurels of having travelled to both Antarctica and the North Pole, told The Daily Star.
Enam, who delivered the welcome speech yesterday, added, “The mountaineers themselves will gather stones for two days at Dughla Pass to build the memorial at 15,700 feet.”
Dughla Pass has many memorials of revered mountaineers like Babu Chiri Sherpa, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa and Scott Fishers who perished in their attempts to scale Mount Everest.
MA Mohit, who conquered Mount Everest twice, will lead the team. The others are Nishat Majumder, the first female Bangladeshi Everest conqueror; Sadia Sultana, Kazi Bahlul Maznu, M Mohiuddin and Shamim Talukder.
Former adviser to a caretaker government Rasheda K Choudhury, architect Mubasshar Hussain, Malik Muhammed Sayeed, head of marketing, Square Toiletries; and AKM Sadeque Nawaj, head of marketing, Berger Paints; were present.
