Peers for punishing 'BCL' attackers
Over 200 physics students of Jahangirnagar University boycotted classes yesterday protesting the beating up of a physically challenged fellow on Sunday and demanding that exemplary punishment be handed down on the attackers, allegedly Bangladesh Chhatra League activists.
Admitted to Enam Medical College and Hospital, Ashraful Islam, who has no left hand from the wrist onwards, had to undergo a surgery to his broken left leg.
The protesters had a talk with the department chairman, Prof Nurul Alam, in the morning before submitting a written complaint at the proctor's office naming the accused.
Talking to journalists, they voiced their concerns of becoming targets of the attackers and accusing the chairman of staying nonchalant and the proctor of trying to settle it through negotiations.
The department's students said prime accused Kawsar Ahmed Ovi of the department's 42nd batch had recently forced a student of the 43rd batch to carry water during a game, aiming to enforce initiation rituals on the freshman.
This student had complained to Ashraful of the 41st batch, leading to a hearing at the department's Chhatra Sangsad on Sunday where Kawsar was found guilty.
Witnesses said, armed with sticks and iron rods, Kawsar had led some nine or 10 BCL activists into attacking Ashraful before the new arts faculty building. The chairman did not receive his cellphone when contacted yesterday. Proctor Tapan Kumar Saha said legal action would be taken soon following proper investigation.
Admitting that he had carried out the attack, Kawsar said it was in response to Ashraful harassing his girlfriend.
