Pabna witnesses panicky after Nizami verdict
Witnesses in Pabna who testified against Jamaat-e-Islami and the then AL-Badr chief Motiur Rahman Nizami during his war crimes trial have expressed deep fear of retribution after today's judgement.
Panicky since their testifying at the International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka, they assume the aggrieved Jamaat workers might raise attacks on them once that the court has awarded highest penalty to their party chief.
The ICT-1 found the 71-year-old former leader of infamous Al-Badr force guilty in eight out of 16 charges and handed him death for four charges.
"We do not feel secured here," one of the witnesses of Santhia upazila in Pabna said seeking anonymity.
In fear, they did not even want to allow their names to be published let alone their photos, our Pabna correspondent reports.
They saw the horror and brutality of Nizami during the war and gave depositions during the trial, they said.
"We are in panic what will happen now," the witnesses told our Pabna correspondent today.
They demanded immediate execution of the verdict for the crimes committed by Nizami.
Santhia police said that they were working to arrange special security arrangement for the witnesses.
Nizami supporters' procession foiled
Police foiled the attempts of bringing out procession by Jamaat-Shibir activists at different parts of the district protesting the judgement, said Siddiqur Rahman, additional superintendent of police.
A tense situation was prevailing in the town and Santhia upazila after the tribunal awarded death sentence to Nizami.
Members of police, Border Guard Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion were seen patrolling in the town.
Law enforcers detained at least 10 Jamaat-Shibir activists at different points of the town.
