Outlaw killed in Chuadanga ‘shootout’
A leader of outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) was killed in a “shootout” with police in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga early today.
Two policemen sustained splinter injuries as the PBCP men hurled crude bombs targeting police during the “gunfight” at Jagannathpur village in the upazila.
A most wanted criminal on police list, Abul Kashem alias Mekur Kashem, 35, was the regional commander of Meherpur, reports our Kushtia correspondent quoting Kamruzzaman, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of the district.
Today's "gunfight" erupted when police cordoned off a mango orchard at Jagannathpur around 4:00am after receiving information that Kashem was holding a clandestine meeting there with his cohorts, the ASP said.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the associates of Kashem hurled three bombs targeting the police personnel, forcing them to fire that triggered the "gunfight", he said.
At one stage, Kashem tried to flee the clutches of law, caught in line of fire and died on the spot, he added.
After the "gunfight", police recovered a gun, five bullets and four handmade bombs from the scene.
Injured policemen of Damurhuda Police Station -- Assistant Sub-inspector Niaz Ali and constable Khalirul Islam -- were undergoing treatment at the local upazila health complex.
Kashem, son of Juran Ali of Boalkhali village in Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur, was accused in at least 13 cases including eight for extortion, two for murder and three for abduction, filed with Mujibnagar and Damurhuda police stations.
According to the police, Kashem in recent days had unleashed a reign of terror by demanding toll to the brick kiln owners in Mujibnagar of Meherpur and Alamdanga and Damurhuda upazilas of Chuadanga.
