Organisation's war crimes trial inevitable: Law minister
Trial of any organisation involved in war crimes is inevitable to fulfill the expectation and desire of the countrymen, Law Minister Anisul Huq said today.
The draft proposal for amending international crimes tribunal act determining punishment for such organisations will be placed before the cabinet soon for its approval, the minister said.
Once the cabinet approves the proposal, the punishment for the offence will be revealed, he said.
The law minister’s comment came two days after US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Stephen J Rapp opposed the trial of any political party or organisation for crimes against humanity.
Rapp called for focusing on individuals who committed those crimes.
He was talking to reporters after attending a view exchange meeting at Hotel Sonargaon in the capital as chief guest.
The minister further said Bangladesh government will go ahead for holding the war crimes trial in its own way.
The law ministry has prepared a draft of amendment to the ICT Act with a provision of banning politics of any war criminal organisation as the punishment for such organisation is absent in the ICT law.
Different organisations have been demanding for holding the trial of Jamaat-e-Islami and its punishment for its crimes against humanity.
