Who to believe -- Rab or Cops?
We are thoroughly confused. But at the same time, many things have also dawned on us following the recent claim and counter-claim over the identity of killed militant Sarwar Jahan.
Confused because we don't know who to believe -- Rab or the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime department of the police?
Rab has claimed Sarwar was the chief of Neo JMB. A day after the counter terrorism department said Sarwar was nothing more than a small fry. A third-tier militant. So, there's nothing much to rejoice in his killing.
Who is correct then and why did this confusion arise? Both surely cannot be correct.
This makes us worried. It clearly shows there is a fissure in the anti-terror fight. There is a lack of credible information on militants. As we all know intelligence is crucial to fighting terrorism and if our intelligence agencies are so confused how could we feel safe?
Rab claims Sarwar's nom de guerre is Abu Ibrahim Al Hanif, the Neo JMB chief. However, Monirul Islam, chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime department, has said Tamim acted as Neo JMB leader.
From all this, we understand for sure that there is some serious lack of coordination in the anti-terror drive.
There is duality of power that is harming the campaign. We fail to understand why anti-terror raids are being conducted separately by the two forces who seem to have no or little coordination and intelligence exchange.
We understand from common knowledge that if you put two persons to do a single task, there would be clash of authority and rivalry and ultimately the task will suffer. If the counter terrorism department of the police is the focal point in handling militants, why should some other organisation carry out raids on its own? Or even if it carries out such tasks, these have to be in consultation and in full knowledge of the counter terrorism department.
Terrorism is a serious subject worldwide and it cannot be made an issue of power game. We believe this claim and counter-claim will be an eye opener and things will be put in proper order.
