As the New Year waits with new things in store, let’s take a tour back to the good movies the passing year presented us with.

And if you are not done watching them yet, you still have the chance to experience them lying under the blanket with some hot cups of coffee. We promise it will be worth it!

Interestingly, the best movies’ list of this year from the most artsy sources also include at least one superhero movie, unlike the other years. Take a look at the list of 12 best movies of our choice of 2017 in alphabetic order here.

1. Coco (IMDb: 8.8/10, Rotten Tomatoes: 97%)

Undoubtedly, it is one of the best movies from Pixar. It does not fall short on the high expectations we are used to projecting on the studio. You should definitely give it a try even if you are not an animation fan. Rich in plot, this movie is also a treat to watch. Despite being an animated movie, it comes with life lessons without sugar coating unlike many other animation movies.

One of the most popular and awaited movies of 2017. Acclaimed writer-director Christopher Nolan strikes again with this World War II thriller about the evacuation of Allied troops from the French city of Dunkirk before Nazi forces could take hold. With an 8.2/10 IMDb rating and 92% Rotten Tomatoes it’s on the must watch list of 2017.

If you like the thrill of a mystery movie intertwined with horror elements, this is the perfect one. The movie tells a story about an age old social issue in the most unique way. This is completely worthy of your time and engagement, perfect for the holiday season.

4. I, Tonya (IMDb: 7.8/10, Rotten Tomatoes: 89%)

A brilliant performance by Margot Robbie as skating star Tonya Harding. The biopic portrays the life and struggles of Harding, the 1991 US champion and 1991 World Championship silver medalist. The movie about the much told saga of the skating star creates a tone that wavers between dark humor and drama. The film has been widely praised for its performances.

5. Lady Bird (IMDb: 8.3/10, Rotten Tomatoes: 99%)

It’s the directorial debut of Greta Gerwig. The tale of a mother-daughter relationship gives a scathing view of growing up poor. Saoirse Ronan’s performance as the 17-year old daughter and Laurie Metcalf as the mother is filled with moments of charming humane emotions. This drama comedy is a good watch full of family love.

We see our favourite non-ageing X-man in a very different light. Wolverine, the mutant, known for his claws, strength and healing power, is vulnerable. Audience with heavy hearts watched and liked which was announced as the last wolverine movie. It becomes more than a story of just a superhero. Along with the usual brilliance of Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart’s acting skills, Dafne Keen is also a treat to watch.

A widely appreciated Netflix original film. A young girl risks everything to save her friend -- the fascinating animal Okja. The film belongs to the action, adventure and drama genre that portrays love between a human and her animal friend. Excellent visual effect and the emotional plot makes the movie a must watch in the year 2017.

8. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (IMDb: 6.7/10, Rotten Tomatoes: 29%)

Although the movie ratings are not as good, the plot fits perfectly in the puzzle that is the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Fans enjoyed the movie thoroughly and the classic acting of Johny Depp as Jack Sparrow. This was also one of the most awaited sequel films of the year and was received by fans very well.

The Cold War-era fairytale is a love story between Sally Hawkins, a mute janitor and the amphibian man Doug Jones in a top secret research lab. A story told through the point of view of the outcasts is claimed to be Guillermo del Toro's best English-language film till now. It is a treat to watch with surprisingly dynamic fantasy and visual elements.

The film follows a six-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her playmates and bonds with her mother, portrayed as rebellious but caring, all while living in a motel in the shadows of Disney World. The American drama film directed by Sean Baker is a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood. The movie providing both brilliance and heartbreak to its audience easily falls into the 2017 must watch list.

Another superhero movie that continues what we perhaps first experienced in Deadpool: comedy combined with super heroism. The movie made the audience laugh till their jaws hurt and bellies ached. It’s a must watch for Marvel fans and for those who were disappointed to not find Thor and Hulk in the Civil War movie.

12. Wonder Woman (IMDb: 7.6/10, Rotten Tomatoes: 92%)

Last but not the least, Wonder Woman is undoubtedly one of the best movies of 2017. The live-action, theatrically released comic book superhero film showcases the stand of a woman against the evil inflicted upon the world. By the end, the woman superhero learns to fight the bad within humanity rather onto them and embraces the good they have at core. The movie is an all-rounder. You get action, romance, humour and some high-end philosophy to ponder about.
