One killed as train derails
A passenger was killed and 10 others were injured as a Dhaka-bound train derailed in Chittagong yesterday.
The accident happened around 12:45pm when the last three compartments of Karnaphuli Express went off the rails at Baratakia in Mostannagar area in Mirsarai upazila, said Imtiaz M AK Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Mirsarai Police Station.
The dead is Nasima Akhter, 35, wife of Nazim Uddin of Ramu upazila in Cox's Bazar.
Of the injured, Md Shahed, 30, and Md Alam, 50, were admitted to Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex with fractured legs. The other wounded persons took primary treatment at different private clinics.
Mahbubul Alam, chief engineer of Bangladesh Railway (east zone), said a salvage train from Pahartali Central Workshop reached the spot and started the rescue operation in the afternoon.
Rescuers could not say how long the operation will take.
The accident halted train service from Chittagong to Dhaka and Sylhet for about four hours till 5:00pm. Down
trains from other districts to Chittagong, however, operated as usual, he added.
A four-member committee headed by Mahbubul will investigate the incident.
