Notice to Rajuk, builders to revive Savar wetlands
Environmental lawyers today served a legal notice to Rajuk and the owner of Savar’s Modhumoti Model Town threatening contempt of court for not restoring the area’s wetlands according to a Supreme Court order.
Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) sent the notice to Rajuk Chairman GMM Zainul Abedin Bhuiyan and Modhumoti town owner AFM Jahangir, also the managing director for Metro Makers and Developers Limited.
The Appellate Division of the apex court on August 7, 2012 declared the Modhumoti town project illegal, Bela’s lawyer Iqbal Kabir Lytton told The Daily Star.
On July 11 last year, the SC released a full verdict ordering the Metro developers to restore within six months the wetlands where Modhumoti town project was implemented, he said.
“The apex court told Rajuk to complete the task at the expense of the builders in case of the Metro Makers builders failed to comply with the order.”
Metro developers was also directed to refund its customers double the money it had charged for each plot of land, including the registration cost, by six months, he added.
After a daily recently published a report regarding further construction and several establishments made functional at the Madhumati town site, Bela issued the legal notice.
Rajuk and Metro developers were asked to revive the exploited wetlands immediately, Lytton said. “They will need to inform Bela of the steps taken in this regard by 15 days.”
“If they don’t inform us about the steps, we will file a contempt of court petition with the Supreme Court against them,” the lawyer added.
