NHRC chief doubts police chain of command
The National Human Rights Commission Chairman chief yesterday said it seemed that the chain of command in the police administration had broken down, resulting in slides in the human rights and law and order situations.
"Police are not arresting the culprits, but rather general people are being harassed," he said, after visiting economist Prof Mahbubullah at Labaid Hospital in the capital. The pro-BNP ex-teacher of Dhaka University was physically assaulted on the Supreme Court premises on Saturday by unknown people.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan said the chain of command was there in the police force; there was no breakdown.
Referring to Mizan's comments, he added, "It is his (Mizan) personal opinions." He was talking to reporters following a meeting at the ministry.
About the attack on the teacher, Mizanur said intellectuals had the right to give their opinions on any issue. “It's not good for democracy when there are attempts to restrict this right.”
Urging the state and the law enforcement agencies to remain alert, the NHRC chairman said, "Persons coming under a physical attack for his opinions is not acceptable, no matter what his ideology is."
Prof Mahbub suffered injuries in the right eye but no internal damage was found.
Prof Mahbub said it was hard to imagine that someone would attack a person like him who had no direct link with politics.
He said he had no idea about the identity of the attackers or their motive but the government could find the culprits.
