The government has decided to declare newspaper sector an industry instead of service, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said today.
The minister disclosed the development at a meeting with the leaders of Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (Noab) at his secretariat office, reports the Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
Among others, Noab President Mahbubul Alam, The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam, Prothom Alo Editor Motiur Rahman, Shomokal Publisher AK Azad, News Today Editor Riazudddin Ahmed and Financial Express Editor AHM Moazzem Hossain were present at the meeting.
The newspaper owners expressed their hope that, once the announcement is made, newspapers will enjoy different facilities from the government under AHS Code.
They requested the government to immediately publish a gazette notification in this regard.
