Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has deployed additional forces along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Nykhangchhari of Bandarban as tension mounted in the area after Myanmar Border Guard Police fired on a BGB patrol team and detained one of its members on Wednesday.
The BGB member,
Nayek Mizanur Rahman, remained captive till the filing of the report last night, acting deputy commissioner of Bandarban Ishrat Jaman told The Daily Star.
Myanmar Border Guard Police opened fire at a BGB patrol team at Panchhari Aga in Dochhari union of Nykhangchhari indiscriminately around 8:30am on Thursday and picked up Mizanur, reported our correspondent quoting witnesses.
Meanwhile, the foreign ministry summoned the ambassador of Myanmar in Dhaka to protest the incident and demanded immediate release of Mizanur Rahman.
Talking to the Myanmar ambassador, Secretary (bilateral) Mustafa Kamal also demanded a thorough investigation into the matter to prevent recurrence of such incident, according to a foreign ministry press release.
The Myanmar ambassador assured that the matter would be duly conveyed to the authorities concerned in Myanmar immediately and that he would get back to the Bangladesh side as soon as he heard from them.
The Bangladesh embassy in Myanmar also demanded from the Myanmar foreign ministry an immediate investigation into the matter and release of the captive BGB member.
