IU classes resume today

The Islamic University here reopened yesterday after 7 days of closure and the classes will resume today. Following a fierce battle between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Islami Chhatra Shibir on March 31, the authorities shut the university and asked the students to vacate the six residential halls within 10.00am the next day.
Two held on border

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested two youths from Thangjhara border area in Hatibandha upazila on Saturday allegedly for trying to enter India illegally. The two were identified as Dipok Chandra Roy, 21, son of Keshab Mohan of Purbo Kadma village in the upazila, and Sudev Chandra Roy, 32, son of Bachchu Chandra Roy of the same village. Locals said Dipok and Sudev went to the no man's land on Bangladesh-India border in the morning where the members of BGB 15 Battalion arrested them.
Benapole workers on strike

Loading-unloading activities at Benapole land port remained suspended yesterday as cargo handling workers of 41 shed went on indefinite strike protesting an incident of theft at the warehouse. Nahiduzzaman, shed in-charge, was allegedly involved in the theft of 3 bags of clothes, alleged the labourers. Golam Mostafa, president of Banapole Cargo Handling Workers Union, said that Nahiduzzaman was caught red handed on April 2. To protest the theft we went on indefinite strike only at 41 shed, he said.
Grocer hacked to death

A grocery store owner was hacked to death at Baniachal village in Sadar upazila of the district on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Jeki Mia, 21, son of Billal Mia of the village. Police and locals said, a gang attacked Jeki and stabbed him with sharp weapons while he was returning home from his shop in the district town at about 10.45pm, leaving him dead on the spot.
Youth's body recovered

Police on Saturday recovered the body of a young man from near a rubber garden in Bahubal upazila. Identity of the deceased, aged around 20, could not be known immediately. Police and witnesses said locals spotted the body lying beside a rubber garden in Jangalbari area on the Mirpur-Srimangal road at around 1.00pm on Saturday.
Robbers loot houses

Two robberies were held in the district town early Saturday. The gang looted cash, gold ornaments and other valuables worth Tk five lakh from two houses. A man was also injured in an attack by the robbers. The injured is Mazaharul Islam of Ramnangar village. Locals said, a gang of 6/7 swooped on the house of one Shafiqul Islam of the village at around 1:30am and looted gold ornaments, Tk 12,000 and a mobile phone set at gunpoint. Later, they looted valuables from the house of Mazaharul, neighbour of Shafiqul. At one stage, the robbers attacked Mazaharul with sharp weapons as he tried to resist them.
