Shaheed Rumi Squad begins fast-unto-death for ban on Jamaat
A group of Shahbagh protesters, under the banner “Shaheed Rumi Squad”, began a “fast-unto-death” on Tuesday night demanding effective steps for banning Jamaat-e-Islami.
Gonojagoron Mancha Spokesperson Imran H Sarker and other student organisation leaders expressed solidarity with the 11 youths, comprising school and college students, a Narayanganj teacher, a jobholder and a blogger, on hunger strike and met them.
The squad, named after late Jahanara Imam's martyred son, embarked on the strike at 10:30pm protesting government inaction despite the Gonojagoron Mancha's ultimatum to initiate the ban by March 26.
Though the strike was declared independently, the squad expressed solidarity with the Mancha's future programmes, including a protest rally on April 4 and submission of a memorandum to the government demanding fulfilment of the demands.
The squad Spokesperson Shejuthi Shonima Nadi said, “We know that if the government wants it can ban Jamaat-Shibir forever at any time...victory or death that is the only way to reach our goal.”
Yesterday evening some of the Shahbagh protesters brought out a procession with lit torches urging the Mancha to initiate tougher programmes.
The squad announced to hold a solidarity rally at Shahbagh today at 5:00pm protesting the government inaction.
