Workers at five garment factories housed in the collapsed Rana Plaza blockaded Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar bazaar bus stand area for an hour Tuesday morning demanding their arrears.
President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Atiqul Islam, however, told The Daily Star that they would clear the wages by Tuesday afternoon.
Shyamol Kumar Mukherjee, additional superintendent of police of Dhaka, said hundreds of workers along with their relatives blockaded the highway about 11:00am and started demonstration as BGMEA is yet to pay their salaries.
The agitated workers withdrew the blockade at noon after officials of district administration assured them of taking steps in this regard, he said.
Rana Plaza collapsed on April 24 after owners forced several thousand workers to work there even after cracks had developed on some pillars and floors the day before.
The death toll from the Rana Plaza collapse soared at 697 till 11:00am Tuesday. At least 2,437 people were rescued from the debris of the building.
It is still unclear how many workers were there on that fateful day.
