Farroque gets HC bail in Nayapaltan blast case

The High Court yesterday granted bail for six months to opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque in a case filed on charge of blasting cocktails near BNP's central office in the capital's Nayapaltan on March 11.
It passed the order of bail after hearing a petition filed by Farroque on April 7 seeking bail in the case lodged with Paltan Police Station on March 12.
Earlier on April 17, the opposition chief whip got bail from the HC in another case filed on charge of attacking police.

Ctg edn board reschedules HSC English 2nd paper exam

Chittagong Education Board has rescheduled the HSC English second paper examination for May 17.
It was to be held on May 4.
Dr Pijush Dutta, examination controller of the board, yesterday said, “As there is an examination on May 3, examinees requested to change the date for the May 4 examination.”
The paper would be held from 9:00am on May 4, he added.

Man 'commits suicide' in Ctg

A man committed suicide allegedly by hanging himself from the branch of a tree near his house at Satkania upazila of Chittagong Monday night.
The deceased was Amin Sharif, 32.
Yesterday, police sent the body to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Quoting family members, police said Amin hanged himself at any time after 11:3pm, as his father did not give some amount of money for treatment of his wife.
An unnatural death case was filed with Satkania Police Station.

Mobile court jails two, fines restaurants

A mobile court yesterday sentenced two persons to jail for making ghee with palm oil and other low quality substitutes at their house in the capital's Central Road area.
The court also realised Tk 4 lakh as fine from Heerajheel and Tk 2 lakh from Gharoa restaurants at Motijheel for preparing food items with expired and low quality ingredients, said Executive Magistrate AHM Anwar Pasha.
Of the two, Abdul Khalek was sentenced to jail for 15 months while Akhter Gazi to three months' imprisonment.

4 houses gutted in Khulna

At least two bamboo warehouses and four dwelling houses were gutted in a fire in Khulna city's Natun Bazar area early yesterday.
Police and fire service sources said the fire originated around 2:30am at the warehouses of ones Nurul Islam and Abdur Razzak and soon engulfed the adjoining four houses of Abu Bakker.
Abul Kalam Azad, assistant police commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police, said the reason behind the fire could not know immediately.
Two fire fighting units doused the blaze within two hours, he added.

Arms, drug smuggler held in Ctg

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-7) and the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) arrested an arms and drug smuggler in Chittagong city yesterday morning.
The arrestee is Shahidul Islam, of Anwara upazila.
On information, the joint team arrested Shahidul with a gun, 42 bullets of different firearms, a magazine, 1,100 Yaba pills and Tk 5.89 lakh at his Patharghat residence.
During primary interrogation he confessed to his involvement in smuggling since 1990, said DNC officials.
Two cases were filed with Kotwali Police Station.

4 railway staff arrested for stealing  ticket money

Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi
Government Railway Police arrested three staff of Bangladesh Railway [west zone] on Monday night on charge of misappropriating Tk 8.84 lakh from sale of train tickets at Rajshahi booking office.
The arrestees, Abdur Rahman, Shahabuddin and Mamunur Rashid, are all ticket-booking assistants, said Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Government Railway Police.
On Sunday, four employees of BR were suspended in connection with misappropriating the money from ticket sales.
The other accused Rabbel Ali is on the run.
