Milky's family demands party actions
Family members of slain Jubo League leader Riazul Haque Milky yesterday demanded expulsion of two fugitive murder suspects Zahidul Islam Tipu and Wahidul Alam Arif from their respective political platforms.
Tipu and Arif, general secretaries of Awami League's Motijheel and Jubo League's Dhaka city (south) units, should be expelled to make sure that there is no political interference in the investigation of Milky murder case, they argued.
Primary investigation in the case revealed the names of several leaders of the ruling party and its youth wing. Rab-1 is now probing the case.
Milky, organising secretary of the Dhaka city (south) unit of Jubo League, was gunned down and killed allegedly by Jahid Siddique Tarek, joint-secretary of the same Jubo League unit, at the Shopper's World in the capital's Gulshan at 1:07am on July 30.
The same day, Milky's brother Major Rashedul Haque Khan filed the murder case with Gulshan Police Station against Tarek, Tipu, Arif and Shakhawat Hossain Chanchal, organising secretary of Dhaka city (north) unit of Jubo League.
Hours after the murder, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Tarek at a hospital in Uttara. The Jubo League leader was killed in a “shootout” between Rab members and his cohorts at Kaola near the Shahjalal International Airport on July 31 night when the law enforcers were taking him to Gulshan Police Station.
Conflict over establishing supremacy in the party and gaining control of tenders of different government and autonomous bodies are believed to be the reasons behind Milky's murder.
Talking to The Daily Star, Milky's cousin Niloy Khan Milky said Milky, Arif and Tipu wanted to contest for the councillor post of ward-10 (Motijheel AGB colony and its adjoining areas) in the Dhaka City Corporation election, which was to be held last year.
“Arif and Tipu masterminded the murder as they were jealous of Milky's popularity in the area,” complained Niloy.
Tarek was Milky's follower, but when Milky decided to contest the election, Tipu began to instigate Tarek to act against Milky, he added.
Contacted, Rab-1 Commanding Officer Kismat Hayat said, “Milky's family has informed us about his conflict with Tipu and Arif centring the DCC election. We are probing whether the two were involved in the murder as well.”
He, however, claimed that there was no political interference in the investigation of the case so far. “Law enforcers at all the exit points of the country have been alerted so that Tipu, Arif and Chanchal can't escape,” he noted.
Law enforcers so far have arrested eight people in connection with the murder of Milky. Of them, one is now in Dhaka jail while the others are in remand custody of Rab.
