Long tailback on Dhaka-Mymensigh highway
Thousands of passengers suffered long tailbacks on the busy Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Thursday due to rainwater that submerged different parts of Gazipur.
Most of the areas of the district were waterlogged due to the heavy downpour since early Thursday, disrupting vehicular movements on the highway.
Locals said the three-hour long torrential rain since early Thursday submerged different areas of the district including Bhogra, Chowdhurybari, Dhaka-Bypass and Basansarak, creating traffic congestion on both sides of the highway.
Saiful Islam, a garment worker, said he has to wade through knee-deep water to go to his office in Gazipur town.
Rainwater has flooded different parts of the highway and its surrounding areas due to poor sewerage system, said Abdus Salam, a former member of Basan Union Parishad in Gazipur.
Illegal establishments in different areas are causing obstacle to sewerage system, he added.
A long tailback has been created on both sides of Dhaka-Mymensingh highway due to water logging at different points, said Md Iqbal Hossain, sub-inspector of Naojor Highway Police Outpost.
