Islamic Front threatens hartal in Ctg if Hefajat men not held
Islamic Front Bangladesh yesterday threatened to enforce a half-day hartal in Chittagong on May 5 if law enforcers fail to arrest Hefajat-e Islam activists who attacked a shrine and a mosque in Hathazari upazila.
Leaders of the Islamist organisation made the announcement at a press conference in Chittagong Press Club.
They demanded punishment for bloggers who are defaming Islam and for Hefajat activists who are creating anarchy and carrying out destructive activities in the name of Islam.
They also announced a grand rally to be held in the city's Laldighi Maidan on May 3 to press home their demands.
Islamic Front Bangladesh leaders HM Mujibul Haque Sukkur and SM Hamed Hossain, among others, were present at the press conference.
On April 26, Hefajat men attacked Gazi Shere Bangla Shrine and an adjacent mosque leaving madrasa student Saiful Islam critically injured. Saiful is now undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Meanwhile, leaders of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jama'at Bangladesh, at a press conference, announced that they would hold a grand rally in Laldighi Maidan on May 4.
