Iran beat Bangladesh by 2-0
Hosts Bangladesh put up much improved performance in AFC Women’s Asian Cup but they could not avert a 2-0 defeat to Iran in their second match of Group B qualifiers at the Bangabandhu National Stadium Thursday.
Smarting from a huge 9-0 defeat at the hands of group-favourite Thailand, Bangladesh’s aim was to snatch a point from their superior side Iran but they could not hold the 52nd ranked Iran, who struck one goal each either half of the break.
But one thing Bangladeshi girls did was to keep the scoreline respectable against the side they had never met earlier at this level and Iranian coach Helena Costa even admired the performance of Bangladesh women’s team.
It was a different Bangladesh, who had spent busy time to keep the scoreline respectable against Thailand, but they this time created a couple of scoring chances against Iran and impressed a couple of thousand spectators after accomplishing five to six passes several times.
“We have proved today that our girls can play football and fought against Iran throughout 90 minutes,” said Bangladesh coach Syed Golam Jilani adding that they should have struck a couple of goals but the luck did not favour them.
