The activists of Hefajat-e-Islam attacked a police camp in Fatikchhari upazila of Chittagong during their ongoing countrywide daylong shutdown on Monday.

Hefajat called the hartal protesting what they said “government obstacles” to their Saturday’s rally in Dhaka.

Around 500 activists of the radical Islamist organisation brought out a procession and attacked Jafatnagar police camp around 11:00am, reported our Chittagong correspondent quoting Md Manzur, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jafatnagar Police Station.

The attackers also tried to snatch away the pistol of a policeman who was on guard the police camp.

When police fired blank, the marauding attackers fled away, the OC added.

The activists are the students Azadibazar Jamiatul Qawmi Madrasa, he said.

At least seven locals were injured when Hefajat men ransacked around 20 shops and 15 houses in Nanupur, Syedpura and Hindupura areas of the upazila.

Additional police forces have been deployed in the areas to avert further untoward incident, said Hafiz Akter, superintendent of police in Chittagong district.

Hefajat men also torched five shops and a house at Mahaliya Tila and Islamia Bazaar in Shahanagar union of Fatikchhari around 11:00am.

Local authorities deployed a platoon of Border Guard Bangladesh personnel in the area to check violence, said Anjana Khan Majlish, Fatikchhari upazila nirbahi officer.
