Visva-Bharati to allocate land to build Bangladesh Bhaban

Visva-Bharati University at Santiniketan in West Bengal of India has decided to allocate land for establishment of “Bangladesh Bhaban” to facilitate the scholars involved in research and studies relating to Bangladesh.
"The university has identified a plot near the Indira Gandhi Centre on the campus for the bhaban", said a press release of Indian High Commission.
The university has requested the Bangladesh government to send a delegation for discussions on the design, plans and estimated cost of the project.
As of now, the "Bangladesh Bhaban" is envisaged to be a two-storey building with 7,000sqft area on each floor.
Altaf president, Afrad general secretary of DUJ

Altaf Mahmud and Quddus Afrad were elected president and general secretary respectively of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) for two years.
The election was held at Jatiya Press Club between 9:00am and 5:00pm.
Atikur Rahman elected as vice-president, Gazi Zahirul Islam as joint general secretary, Sahana Sheuly as treasurer, Sohel Haider Chowdhury as organising secretary, Rafik Ahmed as publicity secretary, Solim Ullah Selim as sports and cultural affairs secretary, Mehedi Hasan as welfare secretary while GM Masud Dhali elected as office secretary.
Commuters suffer for 40km tailback on Dhaka-Ctg road

Thousands of commuters on Dhaka-Chittagong highway had to bear untold sufferings for a 40-kilometre tailback that lasted for around seven hours yesterday.
The gridlock was created from Kabila area in Chandina upazila to Tollplaza area in Daudkandi upazila after a covered van overturned at Zinglatoli around 4:30am. Other connecting roads like Gouripur-Homna, Gouripur-Matlab and Gouripur-Kachua were also affected, said Daudkandi highway police.
Doping gang mugs businessman

A gang doped a businessman and stole Tk 3 lakh from him in a bus that was heading towards the capital yesterday afternoon.
Monir Hossain, 31, a chemical shop owner, was returning to Sayedabad from Narsingdi with the money by a bus of Meghla Paribahan when the miscreants, masquerading as passengers, mugged him, said his brother Shafiqul Islam
Monir was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Dhaka, Cairo sign agreement on scientific cooperation

Dhaka and Cairo have inked a scientific and technological cooperation agreement to strengthen the bilateral relations.
Egyptian Ambassador Mahmoud Ezzat and Secretary to the Ministry of Science and Technology AKM Amir Hossain signed the agreement on January 28, said an Egyptian embassy press release yesterday.
The agreement includes the exchange of scientists, researchers, technical personnel and experts, exchange of documentation and information of scientific and technological nature.
Egyptian embassy celebrates Revolution Day

The Egyptian embassy in Dhaka celebrated the country's Revolution Day on Wednesday.
Held at Hotel Westin in the capital, the programme was attended by foreign diplomats, government officials, leading businessmen, senior journalists and eminent citizens of the city.
Ambassador of Egypt Mahmoud Ezzat welcomed the guests. The envoy in his speech also congratulated the new government.
Two Shibir men held in Ctg

Police held two Islami Chhatra Shibir activists in different areas of Lohagara upazila in Chittagong yesterday.
Mojammel Huq Majnu, of Mastarhat village, and Saiful Islam, 20, of Baitush Sharaf Para, were arrested for carrying out subversive activities in the upazila during blockades and hartals, said Lohagara police.
RU students boycott classes protesting hiked fees

Agitating students of Rajshahi University yesterday boycotted all academic activities demanding withdrawal of the university authorities' decision to increase fees and cancellation of evening masters courses.
The students staged a sit-in programme in front of the university administration building; and declared nonstop agitation from Saturday if their demands were not met.
Meanwhile, unidentified miscreants exploded four crude bombs on the campus. No one was injured.
Road crashes kill two

A passenger was killed and two others were injured when two CNG-run auto-rickshaws collided head-on at Madarhat Jamtala in Hathazari upazila, reports our Chittagong correspondent. The deceased was Md Hanif, 45, of Noakhali.
Meanwhile in the port city, 14 passengers were injured when two human haulers collided head-on at Rahattarpool.
In Aamtal area, Moni Das, 40, was injured as an unidentified vehicle hit him.
Our Netrakona correspondent adds, a farmer, Nurunnabi Sheikh, 60, of Kalmakanda upazila, died after a passenger vehicle hit him at Jatrabari in the upazila yesterday.
