Man killed being pierced by falling bamboo

A Rampura man resting in bed met a tragic end yesterday after a large piece of bamboo pierced him in the belly after going straight through the tin roof of his one-storey residence on slipping from ropes being used to pull it up to the roof of an adjacent five-storey building in the capital.
Hawking for a living and a resident of Nasirer Tek area, Mohammad Ali, 50, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by the locals where doctors declared him dead.
Nurul Islam, owner of the building whose exterior was getting a new plaster layer, was arrested over negligence charges.
War crimes convict Mobarak challenges his death penalty

Convicted war criminal Mobarak Hossain yesterday challenged his death penalty given by a war crimes tribunal on November 24 for abducting and killing 33 people of Tanmandayl village of Brahmanbaria's Akhaura during the Liberation War.
Mobarak submitted an 82-page appeal to the Supreme Court, seeking his acquittal of all the two charges on which he was found guilty.
The former Awami League leader also mentioned 77 grounds which he said the court should consider for acquitting him.
Workshop on genocide, justice in Bangladesh begins today

An eight-day workshop titled "From Genocide to Justice in Bangladesh (1971-2014): National and Global Perspectives" begins today at Proshika in Manikganj.
Organised by the Center for the Study of Genocide and Justice, the workshop was inaugurated in the Liberation War Museum in the capital's Segunbagicha yesterday.
Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman, chairman of the Center; Helen Jarvis, former chief of the Public Affairs Section and head of the Victims Support Program of Extraordinary Chamber in the Court of Cambodia, and Prof Rafiqul Islam of International Law, Macquarie University, Australia, spoke at the inaugural ceremony.
RU inter-hall debate begins tomorrow

RU Pro Vice-chancellor Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan will inaugurate the contest, organised by Rajshahi University Readers' Forum, at RU Dean's Complex
A total of 16 teams from 16 halls will participate in the competition.

Aiming to develop relationship among Buddhist youths, the two-day “3rd Buddhist Youth Festival” began at Muslim Institute in Chittagong city yesterday.
State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, Asian University for Women Vice-Chancellor Fahima Aziz, National Geographic adventurer of the year Wasfia Nazreen and Barrister Biplob Barua were present at the festival organised by Buddhist Youth Festival Group, Bangladesh.
5 held with Yaba tablets in Ctg

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-7) arrested five persons with 106 Yaba tablets from Alongkar Intersection of Chittagong city on Wednesday night.
The arrestees are Mizanur Rahman, 25, Foyjul Islam Masud, 24, and Azad Mia, 27, of Chittagong ; and Faruk Mia, 25, and Imrul Chowdhury, 24, of Feni.
