Sust VC blames BCL for Thursday's clash

Vice chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (Sust) in Sylhet yesterday blamed Bangladesh Chhatra League for Thursday's clash on the campus that killed an outsider activist of a faction and injured 20.
Prof Md Aminul Haque told The Daily Star, “We won't shoulder the responsibility of Chhatra League's internal feuds.”
The district and city BCL, at a press conference Saturday, said the incident occurred due to the failure of the Sust authority in tackling the situation.
RU teachers demand trial of Prof Shafiul Islam's killers

Over a hundred teachers of Rajshahi University under the banner of “Progressive Teachers' Society” demanded trial of those responsible for the murder of Prof AKM Shafiul Islam yesterday.
The teachers made their demand at a rally on the campus. They also staged a two-hour long sit-in afterwards.
They declared a three-day long mass signature campaign demanding punishment for the killers as well.
Medical student's body recovered in capital

Police recovered the hanging body of a missing medical student from a hotel in the capital's Fakirapool on Saturday.
Diponkar Debnath, 24, a fourth year student of North East Medical College of Sylhet, son of Dwarokesh Debnath, might have committed suicide, suspect police. Diponkar went out of his Jamtola residence in Sylhet city four days ago after his parents had rebuked him for his poor exam results, and did not return, said the family.
Youth hacked to death in Ctg

A youth was hacked to death near his house in Bibirhat area of Chittagong city early yesterday.
Jahir and Khurshed, who are now absconding, with 10 others, hacked Md Nurul Alam Raju, 20, son of Md Yusuf, claimed the victim's elder brother.
The family also claimed that Raju was a BCL activist and used to resist local extortionists, including the accused two, from committing crimes in the area.
However, general secretary of BCL Chittagong City unit denied Raju's involvement in BCL, while Panchlaish police said he too was an extortionist.
US, Bangladesh allies in fight against climate change: Mozena

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Dan W Mozena yesterday said the United States was an ally of Bangladesh in its climate change adaptation efforts.
“With an annual fund of about US$ 10 to 15 million, our climate change partnership with Bangladesh promotes clean and sustainable development," he said at a programme styled "Combat Climate Change, Conserve Environment and Achieve Sustainable Development" at Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Ctg court orders police to exhume Judge Hasib's body

A Chittagong court yesterday directed CID officials to exhume the body of Judge Hasib Mohammad Sayeed, who died two months ago, from a graveyard in Naogaon for a fresh autopsy.
Criminal Investigation Department appealed to the court as the initial autopsy report ascertained that it was a suicide.
On September 16, police filed a murder case against five persons including Hasib's self proclaimed wife and mother-in-law, who took the additional district and session judge, who was supposed to be at his workstation in Naogaon at that time, to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and claimed that he committed suicide.
5 more illegal billboards pulled down in Ctg

A mobile court yesterday pulled down five more billboards in Agrabad area of Chittagong city as part of their illegal billboards dismantling drive.
The court led by Chittagong City Corporation executive magistrate also fined the advertisers, Bindu Ad, Sky Star, Ruposi Chantga Ad Communication, SA AD and Arshinagar a total of Tk 42,000.
Trial of Sylhet schoolgirl's killers sought

Demanding trial of the killers of a schoolgirl, the residents of Pathantola in Sylhet city formed a human chain on Sylhet-Sunamganj road yesterday.
The body of Salma Begum, 10, a class IV student, who was murdered by unidentified miscreants, was recovered from Bagmatila in the area on Friday afternoon three days after she had gone missing.
The family filed a case with Airport Police Station of which Officer-in-Charge Md Shah Zaman said they could not arrest anyone yet.
Yaba peddler jailed in Ctg

A mobile court yesterday sentenced a Yaba peddler to one and a half years' imprisonment in Bakalia area of Chittagong city yesterday.
Police nabbed Md Delwar Hossain, 18, of Anwara upazila, in Bastuhara area with 49 Yaba pills.
Man found dead in hotel in capital

A man was found dead with his throat slit in a hotel, where he checked in, at the capital's Farmgate last night.
Police could not confirm his identity immediately.
Gonesh Gopal Biswash, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, said the body was recovered from a room on the fourth floor around 10:00pm.
According to the hotel authorities, three men had rented the room in the morning, and the murdered man was one of them. Since the incident, the other two did not contact the hotel.
