Two muggers held in capital

Police detained two fleeing members of a gang which snatched around Tk 1.1 lakh from a garment official in the capital's Mohakhai yesterday afternoon.
The detainees are Aminul Islam, 25, who introduced himself as a final year sociology student of Titumir College; and Abdur Rahman Babu, 23.
Banani police Sub-inspector Abu Bakkar Siddique said Aminul with his four accomplices including Babu looted the money from Mizanur Rahman Zia. The other three managed to flee with the money, he added.
Mohila Dal leader, family sued for 'killing JCD man'

Wife of slain JCD activist Kamal Ahmed yesterday filed a case against eight persons including Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal Sylhet city unit Vice-President Shahana Begum, her husband Tajul Islam and son Raihan Islam.
Shahana and six other accused, including Tajul's brothers Nurul Islam and Rofiqul Islam, his nephew Ripon, and Imran Ahmed, are absconding, while Jyothsna, her maid, has been arrested.
Police arrested Belal Ahmed, brother of Shahana, also Sylhet City Corporation's former ward councillor, on Monday soon after Kamal, who was accused in the murder case of Shahana's son, was stabbed to death.
Fire guts jhut worth Tk 70,000

Jhut (garment by-product), worth around Tk 70,000, was gutted by a fire in a towel factory inside Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) early yesterday.
The fire originated from an electric short circuit at a tin-shed washing plant of Towellers Bangladesh Ltd at sector 01 road-4, said EPZ fire officials.
Fire fighters doused the fire almost after an hour.
Man held with 500 Yaba pills in Ctg

Police arrested a man with 500 Yaba pills, worth Tk 1,50,000, at Shah Amanat Bridge in Chittagong early yesterday.
Police intercepted Nazrul Islam, 42, of Cox's Bazar, on suspicion and recovered the pills from his body. Nazrul works as an assistant for his uncle who is a lawyer.
RU admission test starts Oct 19

Admission test for honours programme of Rajshahi University will be held between October 19 and 25.
Test for each of the eight units will be held under two shifts divided on the basis of odd and even roll numbers of the admission seekers.
MCQ tests of H and C units will be held on October 19, F and G units on 20, D and E units on 21 while B and A units on 22.

Ambassador Ziauddin urges US to reinstate GSP benefits

In a meeting with Congressman Joseph Crowley, Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Mohammad Ziauddin urged the US to consider reinstating the Generalized System of Preferences benefits taking into consideration Bangladesh's efforts to comply with US Actions Plan, which centres around better workplace safety and labour standards of the garment industry.
During the meeting in Capitol Hill on September 17, the duo also discussed on eliminating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
The influential democrat is also co-chair of the Congressional Bangladesh Caucus in the House of Representatives.
Korean NGO workshop held in capital

The 2014 Annual Korean NGO Workshop organised by the Korea International Cooperation Agency was held at Koica Bangladesh office Wednesday.
Korean NGOs, funded by Koica, working for the socio-economic development in Bangladesh joined the programme, says a press release.
Lee Yun-young, Korean ambassador to Bangladesh; and Rawanak Mahmud, director (registration), NGO Affairs Bureau, Prime Minister's Office, were, among others, present on the occasion.
Missing youth found dead on Ctg hill

A youth was found dead on a hill in Chittagong city's Tigerpass area yesterday a day after he had gone missing.
The deceased was Md Didar, 20, son of Md Hanif of Ambagan Railway Colony area in the city.
Police recovered the body with injury marks on the head, face, back and chest.
Mamunur Rashid, sub-inspector of Khulshi Police Station, said they were investigating the incident.
