Jaitley sparks fury over gang-rape comment

The father of a student who died after being gang-raped on a moving bus in New Delhi spoke of his anger yesterday after Indian Minister Arun Jaitley referred to the infamous attack as a "small incident". Jaitley said at a tourism conference on Thursday that "one small incident of rape in Delhi, advertised the world over, is enough to cost us millions of dollars in terms of lower tourism".
Irom Sharmila re-arrested

Social activist Irom Sharmila was rearrested yesterday morning by about 30 women constables from the shed of the Save Sharmila Organisation where she has been undergoing fast along with other women activists. After her release on Wednesday from a make-shift prison in Imphal, Ms. Sharmila supported by hundreds of womenfolk and social organisations had walked free from the make-shift prison at J N Government Hospital where a room has been converted into a jail for her. Soon afterwards she had begun her fast at a place near the hospital.
Pak soldier killed from Afghan attack

A paramilitary soldier was killed in an exchange of fire with militants who entered Pakistani territory from Afghanistan yesterday, the military said. The incident happened in Muslam Bagh sector in southwestern Baluchistan province near the Afghan border. "About 70 to 80 terrorists intruded from (the) Afghanistan side into Pakistani territory," the military said in a statement.
Nigeria records two new cases of Ebola

Nigeria said yesterday that two more people had tested positive for Ebola, taking the total number of confirmed cases of the deadly virus in the country to 14, including five deaths. "Nigeria has now recorded the first two cases of Ebola Virus Disease in secondary contacts of the index case," Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu told a news conference in Abuja.
German cop in dock over cannibalism website killing

A German police officer went on trial yesterday accused of murdering a willing victim he met on a website for cannibalism fetishists so he could make a grisly pornographic home video. In a macabre case that has captured global attention, prosecutors say the 56-year-old defendant, Detlev Guenzel, killed the man at his home last November, then cut his body into small pieces and buried them in his garden.
Libya football stadium hosts videotaped execution

An Islamist armed group carried out a videotaped execution of an Egyptian man in a football stadium in Libya, in what Amnesty said yesterday highlighted the country's descent into lawlessness. Amnesty International said it was carried out on August 19, apparently by an extremist militant group,the Shura Council of Islamic Youth, in front of a crowd seated in the stadium.
