MK Alamgir freed on bail
Former state minister and Awami League (AL) presidium member Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir was released on bail from the prisons cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital yesterday.
Arrested on February 4 last year, the AL leader was freed at about 5:00pm after 20 months of his imprisonment.
Several hundred leaders and activists of AL thronged the BSMMU premises to greet their leader.
On July 26 last year, a special court sentenced Alamgir to 13 years imprisonment for amassing wealth illegally and hiding information of his wealth.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on March 6 last year, accusing Alamgir of amassing wealth worth over Tk 3.27 crore beyond his known sources of income.
The freed Alamgir now faces a tax-evasion case. National Board of Revenue (NBR) filed the case against him on September 21 this year for dodging income tax of about Tk 53.15 lakh from 2002 to 2007.
