Leaders of Bangladesh Hindu Bouddha Christian Oikya Parishad yesterday urged the government to stop the process of promulgating the proposed vested property scrutiny and disposal ordinance.
In a joint statement they said, "We are apprehending that harassment against religious minority people and their evictions will increase if the ordinance is promulgated."
The statement said a bill on Vested Property Transfer Act was finalised on consensus of all political parties at the parliamentary standing committee in April 2001.
The bill provides that a list of vested properties would be published in the gazette notification and the heirs of the owners of the properties would get the properties through the tribunals after the deaths of the owners, it added.
“We have been demanding the return of the properties to the heirs in absence of the owners through ordinary rules,” said the Parishad leaders.
They said it has been reported in the newspapers that the draft of the proposed vested property scrutiny and disposal ordinance has already been finalised.
The statement was issued jointly by presidents of Bangladesh Hindu Bouddha Christian Oikya Parishad Major General (retd) CR Dutta, Advocate Siril Sikder and Ushaton Talukder and its General Secretary Nim Chandra Bhowmik.
