Ctg landslide crushes 5 houses: Two injured
Five houses were crushed under mud and two people injured in the early hours yesterday during a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall over the last three days.
Some locals however allege that indiscriminate cutting of a large hill for construction of a resort by a private company caused the landslide.
Witnesses said bulks of earth broke down and fell from the Fata Pahar hill at Nasirabad Ruby Cement Gate area adjoining the Hill View Residential Area during the landslide at around 2:30 am.
Nurul Hoque, 50, and his daughter Ruma Akhter, 12, who were injured in the landslide were released after first aid from Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Other residents were able to escape before the houses went down.
Sources said authorities of a company called Hasan & Brothers Group, owned by Mir Md Hasan, has illegally been cutting the hill down to clear an area of around two acres to construct a hilltop resort since February last year.
The Department of Environment (DoE) and Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) have already lodged two different cases against Mir Hasan with Bayezid Police Station (PS) in this connection.
DoE Chittagong Director Nazmul Hoque said the charge sheet of the case has also been submitted.
Landsides killed 10 people -- nine of them children in Cox's Bazar area on Thursday morning. Eight of them belonged to two families at Teknaf upazila headquarters in Cox's Bazar. Another child died in Ukhia upazila when a wall collapsed on her during a landslide.
