BCL withdraws indefinite programme on assurance of action against attackers
Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) yesterday observed students strike on the campus demanding 'proper action' against the people responsible for Thursday attack on BCL men by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
However, they later withdrew their indefinite strike following the authority's assurance of meeting their demand.
Hundreds of BCL activists of Ruet unit, BCL RU unit and BCL city unit jointly formed a human chain in front of the administrative building in the morning to press home their six-point demand.
The demands are -- immediate resignation of Student Welfare Adviser Prof Sayed Abdul Mofiz, arrest and punishment of responsible JCD activists, cancellation of examinations scheduled for June 29 and July 6, unconditional release of arrested students belonging to BCL and ensuring their security on the campus.
Academic and administrative activities on the campus stopped as agitating BCL men barred the teachers from taking scheduled classes and examinations.
University buses could not ply any route and attendance of general students on the campus was poor, campus sources said.
At around 12:00pm, a ten-member team including Bangladesh Awami League (AL) central committee member, also city AL general secretary, KHM Khairuzzman Liton with BCL central leaders, Ruet, RU and city leaders met Ruet Vice Chancellor Prof Anwarul Haque at his office and discussed matters related to Ruet BCL's indefinite strike.
After discussion for one and a half hours, Khairuzzman Liton with other leaders joined BCL demonstration and persuaded the BCL leaders to withdraw their indefinite strike by informing that Ruet authorities assured them of meeting their demands.
Rafiquil Islam Khan, officer-in-charge of Motiher Police Station told this correspondent that police continued hunting the responsible JCD activists.
On Thursday, armed cadres of JCD torched and vandalised dozens of rooms belonging to BCL activists. The incident left 20 BCL men injured.
