3 youths jailed for possessing Yaba tablets
A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced three youths of well-off families to jail terms ranging from one year to fours years for possessing 16 Yaba tablets and 24 pornographic CDs.
The convicts are Dayee Khan Meer alias Chiku, Mahmud Al Juberee alias Shanon, and Altaf Akmal Kollol.
The court, however, acquitted three other youths -- Sheikh Wahed Shafiq, Salman Rahim Juardar and Mushfiqur Rahman Tamal -- as charges against them could not be proved.
Judge Mohammad Nurul Huda of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 handed down the verdict at a packed courtroom.
Chiku was sentenced to one year's rigorous imprisonment (RI) while Kollol to four years and seven months' RI. Kollol was also fined Tk 5,000. If he fails to pay, he will have to serve three more months in jail.
The other convict, Shanon, was sentenced to one year and three months' RI.
Earlier, the prosecution and the defence had completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 24 prosecution witnesses.
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested the six youths from different places of Gulshan area on October 18 last year and seized 16 Yaba tablets, 24 pornographic CDs and seven bottles of Phensidyl from their possession.
Following the seizure, Rab filed a case against them under the Narcotics Control Act with Gulshan police the same day. The investigation officer pressed charges against the six on December 11 last year.
Special Public Prosecutor Sahidul Islam Sardar appeared for the state while advocates ABM Sharfuddin Khan Mukul and Masud Ahmed Talukder defended the accused.
