2 crucial matches today
The thirteenth round of the Grameenphone Bangladesh Premier League gets underway today with two high-voltage matches taking place in two separate venues.
Holders Abahani take on league leaders Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club at the Bangabandhu National Stadium at 4:30pm while away at the Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni Stadium in Gopalganj, last season's runners-up Muktijoddha Sangsad host Sheikh Russel KC at 3:00pm.
Former champions Sheikh Jamal are on top of the league with 25 points from 11 matches, just one point ahead of Abahani and the second meeting between the two teams may go a long way in deciding the title race.
After firing blank in their first meeting, both Sheikh Jamal and Abahani would be looking to secure full three points from this match as an outright victory for either side would put them in an advantageous while leaving the opposition with some catching up to do.
On the back of a 2-0 away win over Muktijoddha Sangsad in the previous match, Sheikh Jamal would be looking forward to notching up their eighth victory against Abahani, who will also be looking to make up for their draw against Brothers Union in the previous match.
Away in Gopalganj, Federation Cup champions Sheikh Russel will be looking for a repeat of their 1-0 win in the first leg against Muktijoddha in a bid to close the gap with leaders Sheikh Jamal.
Having played a match less than Sheikh Jamal and Abahani, Sheikh Russel are on 22 points. Nevertheless, they are eager to return to winning run after their 1-0 drubbing at the hands of Mohammedan in the previous match. Sheikh Russel will have to make do without suspended playmaker Mamunul Islam and striker Mithun Chowdhury.
