Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday said the number of people living below the poverty line would come down to 20 percent from the current 30 percent within the next two years.
“The percentage of poverty-stricken people in the country will come down to its lowest level by 2021,” he said.
Muhith was addressing a discussion organised by Muktijoddha Sanghati Parishad at the Liberation War Museum in the capital marking the Victory Day.
Presided over by Deputy Speaker Col (retd) Shawkat Ali, the discussion was addressed, among others, by senior Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed.
Muhith stressed the need for strengthening the local government organisations to ensure people's empowerment and strengthen democracy.
Mentioning that Bangladeshis are very hardworking and sincere people, Muhith said the country is known across the globe as an emerging tiger due to its huge potentials and human resources.
