Tributes pour in for Sohrab Hossain at Shaheed Minar
Nation paid last tribute to legendary Nazrul Sangeet artiste and guru Sohrab Hossain at Central Shaheed Minar premises yesterday morning. Political, cultural, media personalities and people from all walks of life attended the programme arranged by Shammilito Shangskritik Jote. They also spoke highly on the lifelong contribution of the unparalleled artiste.
Eminent personalities including Sudhin Das, Kamal Lohani, Ramendu Majumdar, Asaduzzaman Noor, M. Hamid, Dr. Sarwar Ali, Rashid Haider, Shaheen Samad, MA Mannan, Khalid Hossain, Sujit Mustafa, RA Mahmud Selim, Suman Chowdhury, Rathindranath Roy, Bulbul Islam, Sharmin Sathi Islam, Bishwajit Roy, Mahadev Ghosh, Mahmudul Hasan and the bereaved family members mourned the deceased.
“We have been close friends since 1948. We have journeyed a long way together to preserve original tunes and to encourage overall development of Nazrul Sangeet. He was a quiet and witty person. Artiste like him will never be found in the days to come,†said Nazrul Sangeet exponent Sudhin Das.
“Sohrab Hossain was a humble and humorous person. He could perform all the diverse sub-genres of Nazrul Sangeet -- be it Kirtan or satirical songs. He would follow proper notations both in singing and in teaching. If we follow the right path showed by the artiste, we can then properly pay tribute to him,†said cultural activist Kamal Lohani.
Officials from the Prime Minister's office; Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University AAMS Arefin Siddique; Mahbubul Alam Hanif, on behalf of the ruling party; Rashed Khan Menon MP; Nazrul researcher Rashidun Nabi of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, along with members of cultural organisations and music schools like Chhayanaut, Nazrul Academy, Nazrul Institute, Bangladesh Nazrul Sangeet Sangstha, Bangladesh Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parisad, Liberation War Museum, Udichi, Bangladesh Sangeet Sangathan Samannay Parisad, Katha Abritti Chorcha Kendra, Charukantha Abritti Sangshad, Surer Dhara and BTV also paid tribute to the singer.
The remains of Sohrab Hossain were laid to eternal rest at Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard in Mirpur, Dhaka.
