JU punishes 11 BCL men

Suspends studentship for various terms for assaulting teachers, cultural activists

Jahangirnagar University authorities yesterday expelled 11 students, also the activists of Bangladesh Chattra League, on different terms in connection with separate incidents of assault on cultural activists and teachers, and factional violence.
The decision to expel the students and fine them was taken at a syndicate meeting, Abu Bakar Siddique, registrar of the university, said.
Four had been found guilty of beating the cultural activists during an anti-VC movement on April 28.
Sources said a group of activists of the ruling Awami League's student wing attacked some cultural activists, leaving 15 of them critically injured during the anti-VC movement.
Five of the expelled were found guilty of having an altercation with provosts and house tutors of the Mowlana Bhasani Hall over feasting in a dinner party on the night of the Victory Day.
They argued with the teachers to get their meals without purchasing any dining coupons, sources said.
The rest two students were found guilty of leading a factional violence among the BCL activists of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and Mowlana Bhasani Hall on December 2.
All the 11 students had been expelled according to the findings of a three-member probe body formed by the university authority.
Four students, who were found involved in beating the cultural activists, are SM Mahtab Mehedi of economics department, Md Jahangir Alam of Bangla, Md Saifur Rahman of government and politics, and MG Rabbi of philosophy department.
Mehedi had been expelled for one month and fined Tk 3,000, while Alam, Saifur and Rabbi for two months and fined Tk 2,000 each.
Five students, who had been expelled for three months each in connection with the altercation at Mowlana Bhasani Hall, are Ferdous Ahmed, Shakil and Ullas of government and politics department, Shaon and Shuvo of geography and environment department.
Nurul Haque of physics and Arafat of law and justice department had been expelled for three months and fined Tk 500 each for leading the factional violence.
