Elastography can be used as an effective tool to detect cancerous tumours more accurately, said researchers at a seminar in the capital yesterday.
However, since elastography is an emerging medical imaging modality, most radiologists are not aware of it and do not use the technology, said Prof Md Kamrul Hasan of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) at the programme.
The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Buet organised the seminar at the university's Bangladesh-Korea Information Access Centre.
Elastography is a method to detect and classify tumours through measuring the stiffness of body tissues. Since a cancerous tumour is stiffer than normal soft tissues, elastography can be used effectively to detect cancer, Hasan said.
He also said most ultrasound machines already have added features to perform elastography. But medical experts in the country do not use this methodology as they are not aware of it.
Md Kamrul Hasan and three other academics of EEE have been doing a basic research on elastography for the last two years.
