Turag polluters fined
The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined two factories in Gazipur a sum of Tk 21 lakh for discharging untreated liquid waste into the Turag river.
Mohammad Munir Chowdhury, DoE director (enforcement), fined Drug International Limited in Tongi Tk 9.98 lakh and RS Knit Composite Limited in Kaliakair, Tk 10.75 lakh, said a press release.
The DoE team during a drive found there was no oxygen in the liquid flowing to Turag river from the factories.
Quality Manager of Drug International Limited, Amzad Hossain, said they have an effluent treatment plant (ETP) working from 2008 to treat the liquid waste. But, only on September 26, when the DoE collected samples, a compressor of the ETP went out of order and failed to treat the waste properly.
"On the very next day we repaired the ETP," he said.
The Daily Star could not contact Managing Director of RS Knit Composite Limited, Towhid Hossain Khan, despite repeated attempts.
The DoE director asked the authorities of the two factories to desist from polluting the river.
