SC to hear Khaleda's plea Jan 10
The Supreme Court yesterday fixed January 10 next year for hearing an appeal filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia against a High Court verdict in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
The HC on December 14 last year, in a verdict, rejected a petition of Khaleda to stop the proceedings. It also order to continue the case filed against her and six others at the lower court.
Khaleda in last March filed a leave-to-appeal petition with the SC, through her lawyers, challenging the HC verdict.
On March 7 this year, the SC had fixed June 12 for hearing the appeal. But, the court did not hear the matter on the fixed date.
Khaleda Zia on October 7 filed the petition with the SC for re-fixing a date for hearing the appeal.
On July 3, 2009, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against Khaleda, her son Tarique Rahman and five others with Ramna Police Station in connection with embezzling more than Tk 2.10 crore by forming the "fake" organisation Zia Orphanage Trust.
