Efforts on to bring back fugitive killers
Home Minister Shahara Khatun yesterday said diplomatic efforts were on to quickly bring back the fugitive killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to complete the execution of his murder trial's verdict.
She alleged that the BNP-Jamaat had tried to foil the trial of Bangabandhu's killers. “We had to wait 36 years to get the justice…the nation got rid of the stigma with the trial of Bangabandhu's killers.”
Shahara was addressing a discussion organised by Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal at Jatiya Press Club in the capital in observance of Bangabandhu's 37th death anniversary.
Of the 12 condemned killers, five were executed on January 27, 2010 while another died while seeking political asylum in Zimbabwe in June 2001.
The six fugitives are Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Shariful Haque Dalim, Nur Chowdhury, Rashed Chowdhury, Abdul Mazed and Moslehuddin Khan.
Speaking as the chief guest, Shahara alleged that local collaborators, anti-liberation forces and killers had assassinated Bangabandhu brutally. “August 15 is a black night…it is a night of brutality…people still panic remembering the night.”
She said Bangabandhu and his family members had been victims of the brutality of the anti-liberation forces.
On the war crimes trial, she said the government was determined to complete the trial of war criminals in line with its election manifesto. “The BNP-Jamaat alliance is hatching conspiracy to foil the trial of war criminals.”
She alleged that they (BNP-Jamaat) killed people, called hartals, hurled bombs at Bangladesh Secretariat and torched vehicles in front of the Prime Minister's Office in a bid to create anarchy to foil the trial of war criminals.
“They do not want people to stay safe and live in peace,” she said.
Shahara reiterated that no conspiracy would be able to foil the trial of war criminals. “The government will not allow anybody to create anarchy in the country.”
Addressing the programme, Industries Minister Dilip Barua urged all to come forward and strengthen the hands of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to carry out development works in the country.
“The government has the ability to construct the Padma bridge with its own funds…Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lay the foundation stone of the bridge in December next,” Barua added.
He alleged that the opposition BNP was now conspiring to foil the implementation of the Padma bridge project. “No conspiracy can stop the project's implementation.”
Dhaka city Awami League Organising Secretary Shah Alam Murad, Hazera Sultana of Workers' Party of Bangladesh and leaders of the ruling AL-led 14-party alliance also spoke on the occasion.
