JU teachers lay siege to admin building
Jahangirnagar University teachers under the banner, “Shammilito Shikkhak Parishad”, laid siege to the administrative building yesterday demanding that the vice chancellor postpones the special senate meeting he called for July 20 to nominate three people for the VC post.
In another incident, some 100 students blocked Dhaka-Aricha Highway for around an hour on Friday night demanding uninterrupted power supply. Residents of a hall also staged a sit-in in front of the administrative building yesterday demanding different facilities.
The teachers said 52 out of 88 posts in the senate were being held by unelected people. The senate members must be first elected and selected so that they can then nominate the persons for the VC post, as per the Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973, they said.
During the siege, from 10:00am to 2:00pm, an altercation ensued between VC Prof Anwar Hossain and the teachers when he tried to leave the building.
Friday's barricade, erected at 10:00pm, was accompanied by demonstrations in front of the university's main gate and was withdrawn after the proctorial body arrived and assured to meet the demand.
Some 300 residents of Shaheed Rafiq-Jabber Hall brought out a protest procession and staged the sit-in demanding a cafeteria, gas connections, a salon and shops in the hall.
When they submitted a memorandum to Prof Anwar, he assured to meet their demands.
