Bangladeshi expats stage demo in front of WB HQ
A large number of Bangladeshi expatriates on Wednesday demonstrated in front of the World Bank (WB) headquarters in Washington protesting the bank's cancellation of the Padma bridge loan over corruption allegations.
During the demonstration, organised by the US chapter of Awami League (AL), its president Siddiqur Rahman submitted a memorandum to a representative of WB president for reconsidering the loan cancellation decision.
A large number of Bangladeshi expatriates, AL leaders and workers from different US states joined the Wednesday's agitation, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
The expatriates said the WB's decision to cancel the credit cannot be accepted for any excuse. They chanted, “Credit is our right, not favour”.
AL leaders at the programme declared to continue their agitation until the WB reconsiders its decision.
Abdul Momen, Bangladesh's permanent representative to the UN, welcomed the government's decision to construct the Padma bridge with its own fund.
Meanwhile, the staff of the Bangladesh Mission in UN declared to donate their one day's salary to the Padma bridge fund.
