Govt spent Tk 4.36cr to publish supplements on national days
The Awami League-led government has spent over Tk4.36 crore for publication of special supplements in different daily newspapers marking eight national and special days in the outgoing fiscal.
Large amount of the public money went to a huge number of name only newspapers, according to a list placed in the parliament by Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad in question-answer hour yesterday.
The Department of Film and Publication (DFP) under the information ministry spent the money.
According to the list, Tk 1.01 crore was spent for publication of the supplements in 207 daily newspapers to mark the national mourning day on August 15.
Special supplements were published in 183 daily newspapers spending Tk1.21 crore to mark the national Victory Day on December 16.
The government published special supplements in 90 daily newspapers spending Tk 74.69 lakh to mark its three years in office.
Tk 53.45 lakh was spent for publishing supplements in 151 daily newspapers to mark the homecoming day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on January 10.
On International Mother Language Day, the government published supplements in 175 daily newspapers by spending Tk 16.38 lakh.
It spent Tk 9.94 lakh to publish supplements in 83 daily newspapers to mark Bangabandhu's birthday and the National Children's Day.
It also spent Tk 15.78 lakh for publication of supplements in 158 daily newspapers to mark Independence Day, and Tk 43.88 lakh was spent for publication of supplements in 36 daily newspapers to celebrate winning the legal battle with Myanmar over maritime boundary.
