A day for records
BRB Cables 28th National Age-Level Swimming Championships got underway yesterday with 13 national records being set on the opening day at the National Swimming Complex in Mirpur.
Eight swimmers set records in four different age groups under hand-timing as the electronic board broke down after completion of three events in the morning, according to a Bangladesh Swimming Federation official.
Nazma Akhter of Bangladesh Ansar set the highest three records in the under 15-17 group, followed by Ariful Islam of BKSP, who created two records in the same group, which also saw Asif Reza of BKSP set a record.
Nazma took part in three events -- 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle and emerged champion in all three events after creating new records while Ariful Islam won three gold, producing records in the 400m freestyle and 100m breaststroke events.
Asif set records in 100m freestyle while Mariam Khatun of Bogra Swimming Club set a new benchmark in the 100m breaststroke event.
In the Under 11-12 group, Jahidul Islam of BKSP grabbed three gold medals after setting two records in the 100m free style and 100m butterfly events, while Merina Khatun of Alamgir Swimming Club won three gold medals in the girls' section of the same group.
Romana Akhter of BKSP, who created two new records in the 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley events, won three gold medals in the Under 13-14 group.
In the Under 18-20 Group, Rubel Mir Siddique set up a record in the 200m butterfly event while teammate Palash Chowdhury set a new record in the 400m individual medley.
A total of 36 events were settled on the opening day as some 836 swimmers, including 238 girls, took part in the meet. At the close of the first day, BKSP were on top of the gold haul with 24 gold, 18 silver and nine bronze while Bangladesh Ansar were second on the list with seven gold, five silver and 12 bronze. Alamgir Swimming Club were in third position with three gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
