Construction work remains suspended
Construction work of a building in the capital's Bhashantek area remained suspended at the threat of local extortionists who attacked workers at the site a week ago at the denial of extortion money.
Land owner Sufi Faruq Ibne Abu Bakar alleged that the criminals had been demanding money from him since work started at the site on February 3 following signing with a developer company for construction of a multi-storied building on the land.
Also, the criminals equipped with weapons attacked the construction site on February 5, stabbing two workers with machetes and beating up other workers, he said.
“The extortionists also stopped the construction work in association with some local leaders of ruling Awami League and its student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League,” he added.
Same day, Bakar's relative Mohammad Rakibuzzaman filed a case with Kafrul Police Station in this connection accusing Elite, Bhutto, Nur Hossain, Israfil, Maharam Ali, Samsu Sarder, Anwar, Majibar Rahman, Mejbah ul Alam, Ehsan.
According to the case statement, the extortionists had been demanding Tk 5 lakh from Bakar and injured two construction workers, Abul Bashar and Ruhul Amin, for denial of the demanded amount.
Contacted, Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Kafrul Police Station, said there is a dispute over the land between two groups, both claiming its ownership.
“There are also cases related to ownership of the land that are under trial in the court,” said the OC adding, “Both groups have also filed cases with the police accusing each other of attacking.”
