Girl student blames teacher for harassment in Ctg
Jannatul Ferdous, a class nine student of Pathantuli Khan Saheb City Corporation Girls' High School in the port city, complained of being physically and mentally harassed by her teacher for not taking private tuitions from him.
“He (the teacher) has been offering me for a long time to take private lessons from him, but I did not agree as I was enlisted with another teacher,” Jannatul said.
The teacher, Manchharul Islam, used to often harass her over trivial matters and even sometimes without any reason, she said.
“Today (yesterday), as I was going to assembly with my friends, he found us at the stairs to the first floor and began to slap me saying 'why are you so late' while he did not say anything to my friends,” she said with tearful eyes.
Her friends, Afroja, Sumaya and Jahanara, also confirmed the incident. They said Manchharul often harass Jannatul in the classroom.
Asked, Manchharul said he just slapped the girl as she was late in the assembly. He denied the allegation of 'proposing to take private lessons' to the student.
“I used to rebuke the girl as she used to come to the school with dirty uniform,” he said.
Jannatul's mother Yasmin Ara Begum said my daughter often complained that her teacher Manchharul used to harass her for not agreeing to take private tuitions from him.
“We did not complain to the school before as we thought it would stop but, today (yesterday), when Jannatul returned home crying saying that she was physically assaulted by the teacher, we decided to complain about it to the administration,” she said.
Jahanara, a classmate of Jannatul, said Manchharul also used to harass her and her mother complained about the matter to the then headmistress.
Abul Hossain, the school headmaster, said he has been informed about the matter.
Some other students also reported of facing similar harassment from the teacher, he said adding that, the school management will take disciplinary action after investigating on the matter.
Contacted, Rehana Begum Ranu, chairman of Standing Committee on Education, Chittagong City Corporation, said a teacher can not harass a student either physically or mentally, whatever the reason might be.
“We will probe into the matter and accordingly take necessary action,” she added.
