Traditional boat race in Panchagarh

A traditional 'nouka baich' (boat race) on the Karotoya River was held last Saturday afternoon in Debigonj upazila headquarters in Panchagarh district.
Make-shift stalls laden with various goods including food items, toys and handicrafts. were set up on the banks of the river.
Thousands of people from Panchagarh and its adjoining districts including Thakurgaon and Nilphamary came to watch the race and cheered in support of their favourite competitors.
Around 26 boats of Debigonj and its adjoining areas of the upazila participated in the competition in two categories.
The first prize winners of two categories were given 20 inches colour televisions while those secured second positions got 14 inches colour televisions. Besides, all the participants were given special prizes.
Lawmaker of Panchagarh-1 constituency Advocate Nurul Islam Shujan handed over the prizes as chief guest.
Prior to the prize giving ceremony a discussion was held at the event.
Superintendent of Police Md. Shahrier Rahman, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Jafar, general secretary of upazila unit Awami League Giashuddin Chowdhury and convener of the competition Hasnat Jaman Chowdhury spoke at the discussion while Upazila Chairman Abdul Malek Chishti was in the chair.
The discussants said we are in danger of losing our glorious Bengali heritage. Such initiatives help to revive our old-aged traditions.
Thanking the organisers, Lawmaker advocate Nurul Islam Shujan said that the present government is committed to promote our Bengali culture and heritage. He assured support to such initiatives.
