Shipbuilder fined Tk 25 lakh
Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined a shipbuilding company Tk 24.99 lakh for grabbing and earth filling in the Meghna River and setting up a shipbuilding factory on the bank of the river without any legal consent.
DoE also asked the shipbuilding company, Maritimus Limited, to evict all equipments that used for grabbing and pay the fine by June 12, says a press release.
The chairman, managing director and deputy managing director of Maritimus were summoned to DoE for hearing.
DoE Director General Monwar Islam on Wednesday visited the spot following a report on the Meghna River grabbing published in a national daily.
The team seized two dredgers, 37 pipes and over 5 lakh bamboos that were using to grab the river. The equipments later handed over to the local police.
